Failing to locate the stone, Kevin, Stuart and Bob leave for San Francisco to rescue Gru, while Otto leaves in pursuit of a biker whom he realizes has the stone as a necklace. However, Knuckles kidnaps Gru before taking him to San Francisco and informs the Minions that if they do not give him the stone within 48 hours, Gru will be killed. Gru's interview goes poorly but, much to the outrage of the Vicious 6, he steals the stone and escapes with Minions Kevin, Stuart, and Bob, handing it to another Minion, Otto, for safekeeping.Īt his basement lair, Gru is outraged that Otto has traded the zodiac stone for a pet rock, causing him to fire the Minions before going alone to find it. Gru is ecstatic when he receives an audition invitation from the Vicious 6, a supervillain team now led by Belle Bottom, who hope to find a new member to replace their founder, the supervillain Wild Knuckles, following their betrayal and attempted murder of Knuckles during a heist to steal the Zodiac Stone – a stone connected to the Chinese zodiac. In 1976, an eleven-year-old Gru dreams of becoming a supervillain, assisted by the Minions, whom he has hired to work for him. It was also a commercial success, grossing over $939 million worldwide and making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2022. The film received generally positive reviews from critics some deemed it an improvement over its predecessor, with praise earned for its score, animation, humor, voice performances (particularly Carell's), and aesthetic, although its plot was criticized. In the film, an eleven-year-old Gru plans to become a supervillain with the help of his Minions, which leads to a showdown with a malevolent team, the Vicious 6.Īfter being delayed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Minions: The Rise of Gru had its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 13, 2022, and was theatrically released in the United States on July 1, by Universal Pictures. Produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures, it is the sequel to the spin-off/prequel Minions (2015) and the fifth entry overall in the Despicable Me franchise. Minions: The Rise of Gru (also known as Minions 2) is a 2022 American computer-animated comedy film directed by Kyle Balda, co-directed by Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val (in Ableson's feature directorial debut), and produced by Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy and Chris Renaud, from a screenplay written by Matthew Fogel, and a story by Fogel and Brian Lynch. The members were predominantly school students, primarily Serbs but also Bosniaks and Croats. Young Bosnia A revolutionary movement active in the Condominium of Bosnia and Herzegovina before World War I. Immediately after Gavrilo Princip, a Yugoslav nationalist, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, in Sarajevo, a series of diplomatic maneuverings led to an ultimatum from Austria-Hungary to the Kingdom of Serbia and eventually to war. July Crisis A diplomatic crisis among the major powers of Europe in the summer of 1914 that led to World War I. It is often advocated by nationalist and pan-nationalist movements and has been a feature of identity politics and cultural and political geography. Key Terms Black Hand A secret military society formed on May 9, 1911, by officers in the Army of the Kingdom of Serbia, originating in the conspiracy group that assassinated the Serbian royal couple (1903) led by captain Dragutin Dimitrijević “Apis.” irredentism Any political or popular movement intended to reclaim and reoccupy a “lost” or “unredeemed” area territorial claims are justified on the basis of real or imagined national and historic (an area formerly part of that state) or ethnic (an area inhabited by that nation or ethnic group) affiliations. Eventually, Britain and France were also obliged to mobilize and declare war, beginning World War I. The system of European alliances led to a series of escalating Austrian and Russian mobilizations. This led to Austria-Hungary invading Serbia. The assassination triggered the July Crisis, a series of tense diplomatic maneuverings that led to an ultimatum from Austria-Hungary to the Kingdom of Serbia, who rejected some of these conditions as a violation of their sovereignty. The murder was described by Christopher Clark as “a terrorist event charged with historic meaning, transforming the political chemistry in Vienna.” The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sent deep shock waves through Austrian elites. The political objective of the assassination was to break off Austria-Hungary’s South Slav provinces so they could be combined into Yugoslavia.Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, a member of the Austrian royal family and heir presumptive to the Austrian throne, was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Young Bosnia movement connected to the Blank Hand secret society.Franz Ferdinand’s demonstration of power in the form of a military parade thus not only ended with his own death but triggered off a war that was to cost ten million human beings their lives. The particular constellation of alliances between European states led to the outbreak of the First World War. The war propaganda machine was set in motion throughout the Danube Monarchy and Serbia was given a sharp ultimatum, which it failed to comply with. Bloodstains on Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s uniform still bear witness to the deed.Īlthough no proof could be found for the Serbian government having been party to planning the assassination, it seemed probable that this had been the case. While on their way to the hospital where the adjutant was being treated, Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were shot by Gavrilo Princip, who had been trained as an assassin in Serbia. Various groups of assassins lay in wait for Franz Ferdinand, and even before noon a bomb injured the Archduke’s adjutant. The date, St Vitus’ Day or ‘Vidovdan’, was and is a particularly sensitive one, being the anniversary of the fateful battle of Kosovo between the Serbs and Ottomans – and thus a Serbian day of mourning. On 28 June 1914, Franz Ferdinand represented the Emperor at manoeuvres and at a parade in the Bosnian town of Sarajevo. His friendliness towards the southern Slavs caused Serbia to see him as a threat to their own expansionist plans. He was particularly concerned about the developments in the Balkans. His distinctive characteristics were his clericalist-conservative general attitudes, pronounced anti-Semitic views, and antipathy to Hungary. Two days earlier, the heir to the Austrian throne Franz Ferdinand had been shot in Sarajevo.īorn in 1863, Franz Joseph’s nephew Franz Ferdinand had come into line for the throne after Crown Prince Rudolf’s suicide and became official heir after the death of his own father Karl Ludwig in 1896. ‘Assassination in Sarajevo – heir to the throne murdered with his wife’ ran the headlines on the title-page of the Illustrierte Kronen-Zeitung of 30 June 1914. How do place brands utilize typography in their branding systems efficiently? This results in having each headline that is never quite the same, with different automations of special characters and combinations… a typeface that is bespoke to the user, and freedom to explore different variations. We worked with type expert Lewis Macdonald to help create the best algorithm of special characters, that automatically swaps out alternative vowels where they have already been used. Open Mind Display adapts and responds automatically, resulting in unique and flexible headlines as well as easy implementation. What was the most rewarding part of creating the typeface? It was then a technical challenge getting this to work we had to ensure the randomized Open Type features are usable on software ranging from Indesign to Powerpoint, meant significant testing and refinement in the font development process. Open Mind Display adapts to custom characters at random, yet carefully spaced intervals, substituting a standard base font with custom alternatives. We found the more simple characters had the most impact when in use.įinding this balance was also something we had to tackle when developing the typeface itself. This was a trial and error process of finding what worked and what felt too forced or detailed once in use. When designing the typeface, we went through lots of iterations of characters, testing them in headlines and seeing how they look as a whole. What was the most difficult part of creating the typeface?Īs this was an open typeface with custom characters, we had to make sure the typeface as a whole had the right balance between functional and playful. We explored different ways each character could come together and be formed, whether that was through UI symbols, such as the refresh symbol in the “G”, or the “L” that showed the collaboration on the island, or the “J” and “D” that showed a pixel effect. Each character was created to reflect technology or collaboration within the tech sector. We designed about 40 custom characters, including a full alphabet, alternative characters for vowels and numbers. This took around a month, from initial drawings in the studio to automating and testing out the best algorithm when in use. You created an entire bespoke typeface, Open Mind Display, for your work for The Isle of Open Minds. The typography brought a voice and intentions behind the headlines such as ‘Thinking IOT. Twists were made on characters to bring back to their ethos, such as the ‘L’ and ‘P’ to show networking and connections, while a glitch effect on letters such as the ‘H’ and ‘J’ provide a distinctly digital feel. With Digital Isle of Man, we wanted to design a typeface that is inspired by the concepts of technology or collaboration. How can typography alone showcase a brand’s ethos?īy bringing in aspects of the personality, references of the brand’s history, and what they stand for. seeing how a typeface stands without the logo and whether this reflects the place or branding system. A typeface with real character, personality, and style can help create impact and be memorable. Our work has a big focus on tone of voice and messaging to really connect with audiences. This meant creating a typeface that could make up the branding system to reflect the tech community. With Digital Isle of Man, we wanted to speak directly to tech founders to attract new businesses on the island. If the typography choice is built on strategy and ideas, I think this is effective to then evoke the brand’s personality, celebrate its history, and bring emotion from the audience. Typography can act as the glue to the different components of the branding system and bring together the meaning and voice behind the brand. What role does typography play in a branding system? I had the opportunity to speak with Mollie Kendell, Senior Designer at Lantern, to learn more about the type design process and how typography can help elevate a branding system. In addition, the design captures the island’s essence, especially the versatility of design pioneers who work within the metaverse by day, but are active and outdoors by night. Because Digital Isle of Man is centered around technology and collaboration, the typeface is designed to reflect its importance. Digital Isle of Man supports the island’s tech sector and helps to develop and implement strategies that support sustainable economic growth.īranding agency Lantern recently helped Digital Isle of Man refresh its branding system, including creating a captivating, bespoke typeface. The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown dependency in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland. Lastly, the villain is shown to have a fascination with breaking Batman ’s spirit rather than simply killing him. Whenever Bane is concerned, there is no such thing as a simple criminal act to be thwarted but a meticulously crafted plan that becomes more and more deadly the further it unravels. In later comic book adaptations, the hulking villain is shown to exhibit an intellect on the level of that of Batman ’s, able to orchestrate grandiose schemes that manage to push the Bat Family to their limits. Furthermore, because the Venom makes Bane such a formidable foe to Batman, it resulted in the duo fighting it out to the point where an exhausted Batman had his back broken by the villain, rendering him paralyzed for a number of months while the villain continued to run amok.Īside from that, Bane is shown to be an expert strategist. The Venom toxin that pumps through his body makes Bane a powerful foe that is rarely outmatched by most members of The Bat Family, including Batman himself, who often has to resort to various tricks and schemes in order to cut the supply of Venom into the villain's body before being able to defeat him. This makes any face-off between The Dark Knight and Bane to be one that poses challenges on many varying levels, as the villain is not only a terrifying presence to behold but one that is shown to be quite calculative in his actions for domination over Gotham City. The reason Bane is so well-recognized both in the pages of the comic books and in the fandom at large is that, unlike many other Batman villains, Bane is arguably as capable, both physically and mentally, as The Caped Crusader himself. Although the character was one of the late introductions to the Batman Mythos in 1993, Bane would become a villain that would resonate in the hearts and minds of fans all across the globe until this very day. Instead, I will simply-BREAK YOU! - Bane to BatmanĪmong the colorful villains that inhabit the chaotic world of Batman ’s Rogues Gallery, there is one particular baddy that is probably the most dangerous and devastating of them all: Bane. “I am Bane-and I could kill you-but death would only end your agony-and silence your shame. We want our oudhs and our green chypres our fresh, perennial florals, our taut, brisé incenses, our classics: the dignity, and poise, and people-distancing respect those categories of scent can induce: the elegance. I suppose in scent terms, to quite a large number of perfumists reading this, the thought of stepping out of the house, sweet, smothered and vanilla-drenched, in an aura of yellow, angelic sweetnesses, into the dark and fur-coated night might seem horrendous. Those tiny flecks of beautiful vanilla you see suspended in custards and yoghurts that so entice the air and the buds concentrated miniscule dots of aphrodisiacal pungency, flowing out knowingly, and coolly into the lactic, surrounding deliciousness… I have long been obsessed with this note: not the cheap, synthetic floriental vulgarity of all the current, pink, booblicious, cheap thrill nasties, but rather the vanillin-specked, dark glistening pods fermenting within their sweet odour in the sun the beans I saw up close and learned how to grow on my stay on an organic vanilla plantation in Indonesia, that ultimate vanilla odyssey, which, for me, was like a dream come true. The combination of these aromas, plus the letter-stamped knowledge of where they came from, filled me with an instant luscious high on this rainy afternoon in October, as I have always – naturally and instinctively, even before I had been to any of these places – loved the life-affirming voluptuaries of the tropical: ylang ylang flowers frangipani, coconut milk, pikake – but in particular the scent, taste, and emotion of vanilla. Even more excitingly, in a light brown manila envelope as well, were some freshly cured vanilla beans from Madagascar, lying enticingly as though they had just been bought from the market in Antananarivo in their new paper bag and somehow found themselves awakened in Japan. In it was a bottle of freshly distilled ylang ylang oil called ‘Ylang Ylang Compte Goutte’, a heady, extravagant liquid coloured a light apricot-orange that was deliciously, pungently exotic. A small parcel arrived in the post yesterday from a friend who has just been to the island of Réunion. Entering a flooded base and exiting through a Moonpool with a Seaglide equipped will cause the player to swim at incredible speeds. If the roof is not being used for anything else (particularly Solar Panels in shallower water), there is enough flat space to place Exterior Growbeds on it. With full acceleration, a Seaglide can jump into the moonpool without using the ladders. If a moonpool is located next to another moonpool, a double connection is possible. This allows the player to freely exit and enter the Seabase outside their vehicle without needing to use a Hatch. The Moonpool also allows the player to access their base from the water via two Ladders on either end of the bottom entrance. The 'rear' of the building is where the rotating antenna is located on the roof: the 'front' of the building dictates the direction a vehicle will face when undocking. As one cannot rotate the Moonpool with the builder, the player will have to physically position themself so that the building 'faces' the direction they want it to. It should ideally be built far enough off the seafloor that a Seamoth will not hit the ground when it is deployed, but close enough that a Prawn Suit can easily reach the entrance with its thrusters. It is recommended to have an appropriate amount of space between the bottom entrance of the Moonpool and the sea floor. To reliably charge a vehicle, one Moonpool requires at least 150 Energy, equal to two Solar Panels. The rate of charging at a Moonpool is much faster than if one were to use a Power Cell Charger: this means that docking a Prawn Suit and swapping out its two Power Cells (which the player still has full access to) is superior to building a Power Cell Charger. Docked vehicles will be charged from the base's Energy, restoring an equivalent amount of Energy to the vehicle's Power Cells. It can, however, release vehicles without power. The Seabase that the Moonpool is attached to must have power (except in Creative Mode) in order to dock vehicles. These can be found in Wrecks or the Mushroom Forest. To unlock the Moonpool Blueprint, the player must scan two of its Fragments. They can also access a Prawn Suit's shoulder-mounted Power Cells, though they will have to jump into the water to access the Power Cell of a Seamoth. From here the player can access the vehicle's upgrade slots and any cargo storage, repair the vehicle, or re-enter the vehicle upon which it is automatically released back into the water. Upon entering the access area, robotic arms will reach down and grab the vehicle out of the water, securing it for charging while a short animation plays of Ryley getting out of the vehicle. The Moonpool can dock one vehicle at a time, and is used by approaching the underside of the structure. It must be placed below water to be useful. It functions as a dock and charging station for a Seamoth or Prawn Suit and is the only room where the Vehicle Upgrade Console can be placed. The Moonpool is a Seabase module which is constructed with the Habitat Builder. and at VGH, is the first and only neurosurgeon in Canada to use a robotic laser system called NeuroBlate that heats and kills cancer cells in primary or recurrent brain tumours. More information can be found at Toyota, head of neurosurgery at the University of B.C. James Perry, will look at whether patients live longer and what dose is most effective. The Canadian arm of the study, being co-led by Downie’s neuro-oncologist, Dr. Kevin Petrecca, an associate professor in NeuroOncology at the Brain Tumour Research Centre at McGill University’s Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, where the first patient in Canada was enrolled in the study.“Tocagen’s innovative approach to fighting recurrent brain cancer using cancer-selective gene therapy is the kind of cutting-edge investigational treatment that we want to offer patients,” he said in a press release. “Brain tumours are extremely challenging to treat, and with 27 Canadians diagnosed each day, there is an urgent need for new therapies,” said Dr. senator Ted Kennedy are two high-profile individuals who died from the same type of cancer as Downie. After relapse, median survival is typically seven to nine months. Patients newly diagnosed with GBM who receive standard therapy have a median survival of 14 to 16 months. In many cases, surgeons are unable to safely remove the entire tumour, which is why many weeks of followup radiation and chemotherapy is necessary. It becomes resistant to most chemotherapy drugs, has a tendency to recur, and is in such an intricate part of the body. The disease is highly lethal because it grows silently, quickly and invasively. Toyota said based on news reports, it would appear Downie has been undergoing standard treatment for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), including surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. The tumour in his left front temporal lobe was detected in December, after Downie had a seizure in Kingston where he lives.
